Joining the Guard

Who Can Join?

Color/Winter Guard is open to any student in the Oak Harbor School District who will be in grades 9-12 in any school year, including those who are homeschooled.

NOTE:  If you are/have a student transferring to OHHS during the summer and misses the Fall Color Guard audition camps that take place in May, please contact us as soon as possible. We can accept students for Fall as late as the beginning of August. Contact us for details/info.

Our auditions are not like traditional ones. We offer mini audition camps where students try it out for themselves, learning beginner levels in dance, flag, rifle and sabre skills. They then decide if they would like to continue on and be a part of the Color/Winter Guard.

We will accept any student that shows effort in learning all aspects of our art form and commits to our program schedule.

What experience is required to join Color/Winter Guard?

None! Zero, zip nada! That's right, no experience needed! We will teach you everything you need to know. Come in with a positive attitude, ready to learn and have fun!

I'm Interested in Learning More, What Do I Do?

We have an Informational Meeting first (usually a weekday evening in the OHHS Band Room) for interested students and their parents/guardians.
At this meeting, you will meet the instructors, current team members, see the equipment, learn more about the Color/Winter Guard program, Audition Camp and ask any questions you may have.

Because this activity requires commitment to learning and availability for rehearsals, we need to make sure parents/guardians are aware and allow their students to participate. An info packet that includes an “Audition Agreement” will be available online and must be signed by a parent/guardian. It must be submitted before Color/Winter Guard Audition Camp begins.

No problem if you miss the meeting, you can send us an email if you have questions. And the digital info packet and online forms mentioned here and at the meeting are at the top of this page. We've got you covered!

Students, Try it for Yourself First

Once the info meeting is done and paperwork is submitted, students will then attend our Color/Winter Guard Camp. This is where you will come in to learn different techniques and a short auditioning routine.

Students will learn alongside current members and learn basics in flag spinning, rifle spinning, dancing and acting. We will teach students everything they need to know and supply equipment.

For Camp, Students Will Need

To wear athletic attire that you can stretch and sweat in (NO jeans and no hoodies), wear gym shoes, bring knee pads & a water bottle.
We also ask that anyone with longer hair bring something (hair ties) to keep it off of their face. We don’t care if your hair is messy, you just need it off of your face and out of your way. No hats or beanies.

Students Decide if They Want to Commit to the Team

At the end of camp, team spot offers will be handed out and students will then need to decide if they would like to commit to the team.  Students will receive acceptance paperwork with instructions before they leave.

When do Auditions Take Place?

Auditions will take place on the last day of Color/Winter Guard Camp. Depending on the amount of students auditioning, we may have you perform in pairs or groups.

Camp for (Fall) 2024 Color Guard take place in May 2024, more info HERE.
Camp for 2025 Winter Guard take place in November 2024, more info HERE.

What Happens After Camp?

There will be a parent meeting for all members & their parents where they will meet staff, get schedules and get measured for uniforms.

For the fall Color Guard, students will return in August for REQUIRED Color Guard Camp along with two weeks of Band Camp that follows after. Here is the UNOFFICIAL 2024 summer schedule:

Color Guard Camp (OHHS): August 5 - 9, 8am - 3pm
Band Camp (OHHS): Aug 12 - 16 and Aug 19 - 23: 8am - 3pm

These camps teach students specific techniques and skills for performing as individuals, as a Color Guard team and as part of the OHHS Wildcat Show Band. These are required in order to properly prepare students for their first performance which happens usually the first week of school, at the first home football game. This program is a "grow as you go" type of activity. Each rehearsal builds onto their show, leading up to their completed show which is used for football half time performances and more important, the two band competitions in October.

For Winter Guard, students will return in December to start regular rehearsals. Here is the tentative 2025 schedule:

Info Meeting: October/November 2024
Auditions Camp: November 2024

First Parent/Member Meeting: November 2024
Rehearsals: November 2024 - May 1, 2025 - Monday through Friday, this was last season's schedule:

Monday: 3pm -5:30pm
Tuesday: 6pm-  8pm
Wednesday: 3pm -5:30pm
Thursday: 5pm - 7pm
Friday: 6pm - 8pm
